The exhibition Victor Burgin. Forms of Telling in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, Germany is the first comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s oeuvre in a German museum.

In his 1969 article on “Situational Aesthetics” Victor Burgin postulated that some art forms were moving from an emphasis on material objects toward pure message. This shift in perception
Conceptual Art, comprised of genres, was itself plural. British-born Victor Burgin worked a sociopolitical, cultural theory vein. His five decades of work influenced art that deals with identity, situational aesthetics, and social critique.
Burgin’s academic books include Situational Aesthetics (2009), The Remembered Film (2004), In/Different Spaces: Place and Memory in visual culture (1996), The End of Art Theory: Criticism and Postmodernity (1986), and Thinking Photography (1982).
The poem that resulted — and Silliman is quite deliberate about labeling this genre-defying work a poem — is titled BART. It is a ten-page piece of prose, written as a single, run-on sentence, which chronicles everything the poet saw and experienced as it occurred — all in “real time” (Age 300–310).
